Isolator® Divider Curtain
The Isolator® is available in QUED®’s durable vinyl weights, with an option for an open‑mesh top. It is supplied with three independent panels allowing the facility to choose multiple colours and/or a mesh top panel for light and air to pass. This model allows selection from QUED® options including valences, alcoves, imprinted logos on vinyl and padded bottom ballast pipes. The divider can provide a limited acoustic benefit when all‑vinyl construction is combined with valences and alcoves; without one of these options, the acoustic benefit is comparable to a single‑wall curtain. The construction includes three independent panels—one upper and two lower—so the impact of one sport is less likely to disturb activity on the other side. The centre rolling Isolator operates at a high speed of 6,096 mm/min (20 ft/min) and rolls both the upper and lower sections simultaneously, eliminating bulky overhead hardware and storing to approximately 508 mm (20 in) below the structure. Dual safety is provided by an electric brake directly engaged with the motor and a secondary safety brake.
Challenge
Offer a configurable roll‑up divider that can mix materials, store compactly, optionally improve acoustics with perimeter detailing, and add floor‑level impact resistance.
Solution
A three‑panel layout—one upper, two lower—supports vinyl‑only or mixed vinyl/mesh builds and allows contrasting colours. The centre rolling Isolator stores close to structure, and optional valences/alcoves enhance perimeter closure where acoustic improvement is desired.

The Curtain
The Isolator® is the most economical acoustic curtain of the roll‑up acoustic models. It is designed to roll up to the ceiling, retracting to about half the space of traditional models. The upper wall can be solid vinyl or Flexmesh if lighting and ventilation are concerns, and the double‑wall lower section can be supplied in a contrasting colour. The lower panels are independent with bottom pockets containing padded bottom ballast pipes. Valences and alcoves are recommended for safety and to improve acoustic performance.
The Hardware
A tubular motor is installed in one end of a custom anodized 114 mm (4.5 in) aluminum extrusion at mid‑height. The motor is thermally protected and contains an electric brake, planetary gear system, and limit switches. Motor control is by electric contactors operated by a spring‑loaded key switch. The curtain can be supplied with valences and alcoves to help seal the gym when the curtain is down; small edge clearances, when installed with valences and alcoves, reduce flanking sound transmission. The roll‑up design reduces stress points and the curtain remains flat; the curtain rises to within approximately 508 mm (20 in) of overhead and can accommodate wall‑to‑wall installations or allow for passageways at one or both ends.
The Operation
When engaged, the mid‑height aluminum extrusion rotates, winding the lower portions of the curtain panels as it rolls itself up the upper portion. The torque reaction is transmitted via a carriage contained in a flexible track mechanism mounted in line with the curtain from mid‑height to the overhead. The curtain rolls flat with no highly stressed areas, and the operation is intended to be quiet. Operation is by a spring‑loaded key switch. Depending on size, a secondary synchronized motor may be required.
Material Properties
Panels: two lower panels and one upper; supplied full width or detailed for passageways per drawings
Options: vinyl in different weights for all three panels; Flexmesh may be specified for the upper section to allow light and airflow
Vinyl: 0.64 / 0.81 / 1.08 kg/m2 (19 / 24 / 32 oz/yd2) vinyl-coated polyester; resistant to staph, rot, and mildew.;
Compliance: Materials meet or exceed NFPA 701, CAN/ULC S109, and ASTM E84; flame‑resistance/smoke labels are attached to two edges of the curtain near floor level.
Mid height: a 4.74 mm (3/16 in) cable is sewn enclosed into the vinyl to retain the panels in the groove of the drive tube
